The
Kirants of Darjeeling started off on the journey of rediscovery together over forty
years ago under the banner of a "Chumlung".
Unfortunately, during the early 1990s friction started
creeping in and the Limbus continued with the parent body, the Chumlung, while the
Khambus founded the KKRSS in 1994.
Actually this move was initiated by the Khambus
of Rimbick/Lodhoma area in 1993 and then was the necessity of a centralized office
in
Darjeelingfelt and instituted.
Like
all associations the aims here are also of the uplift of our society in as many
fields as possible and looking into all the varied aspects of our cultural life
in order to resuscitate our heritage.
To
make this a reality, first and foremost an intensive membership drive was conducted
and organized into Zonal Constituencies. Till date all the Districts of Darjeeling,
that is, Kallimpong, Kurseong, Mirik, Siliguri and Bagdogra Zones are functional.
Even in the adjoining areas of Dooars and Jalpaiguri Zones have been activated.
Each of the Zonal Office will look after their Branch Offices while the Branch Offices
may even have smaller Area Offices.
Since
working unilaterally is neither possible nor advisable we are in close contact with
the Akhil Kirat Rai Sangathan of
Sikkim
, and Kirat Rai Associations of Shillong,
Assam
(Meghalaya) and
Dehra
Dun
, Uttar Khand. We are also in touch with the Yoyokha of
Kathmandu, Nepal
Some
of our primary and immediate targets are:-
1.
The establishment of Mang Khims and propagation of our religious life.
2.
The establishment of a Khumbu Bhavan wherein there may be an office, library, museum,
meeting hall and most importantly accommodation for out-of-station members (at a
nominal fee) and guests.
3.
In the educational field:-
a)
Able and deserving students, from Middle School (Class V) Level to Post Graduate
(College) Level, to be awarded financial grants
b)
Existing schools to be approached for the inclusion of
teaching the Khambu language and literature with a view to opening a Khambu Institution
in the future.
c)
Talented children will also be given special incentives
in the fields of performing arts.
4.
Towards growth an development of our members:
a)
Private Vocational Coaching
Institutes are being contacted to find their requirements for sponsoring deserving
candidates for the State and Central Services.
b)
Entrepreneurs in the fields of Horticulture, Agriculture, Floriculture, Animal Husbandry,
etc. will be sponsored for training in their desired field.
c)
Khambus interested in research work in Khambu culture or publications of their works
are invited to present their credentials in the furtherance of their pursuits.
We
are happy to see that besides Churches, Monasteries and other religious sanctums,
with or without the help of the Central Committee, a sprinkling of Mang Khims are
dotting the scenery of our areas.
For
the Khambu Bhavan three probable sites have been inspected but unfortunately none
found suitable for our requirements.
Financial
grants have been awarded to a number of students while five existing Schools have
expressed their willingness to cooperate in at least teaching the language to their
desiring students. The Zonal Committees have made much progress in the field of
dances and regular dance troupes enliven all our out-door functions.
Training
in the fields of Mushrooms and Orchids have also been given to many of our members
and it is hoped that they will be able to supplement their income with their new
skills. Statistically it is possible that they may convert totally
their source of income.
